Congratulations: Rolf Heide is turning eighty

Without him, interlübke and people all around the world would be considerably poorer. The architect and designer has enriched our lives with his designs for decades. On 23 January 2012 he is celebrating his eightieth birthday. We send him our heartfelt congratulations – with the greatest respect for his accomplishments.

He is enjoying his private life increasingly, and he still supports our company in an advisory capacity. We have been working with Rolf Heide since 1996. The result has been numerous models of classic quality: the wardrobe systems S07 and 40S, the cabinet systems travo and algo, as well as the malo bed – to name only those that are currently represented in the collection. Since 2004 the interior designer and Peter Kräling have jointly supervised the restyling or further development of their interlübke designs. Their new dividing wall system for walk-in wardrobes and intelligent room-in-room solutions with which all elements of the S07 and 40S programmes can be combined are both aesthetically pleasing and functional.

The universal designer
After completing his studies in interior design Rolf Heide set up his own studio in Hamburg in 1960. He worked for renowned German and Italian manufacturers, built houses, designed furniture and furnishing concepts, and planned trade fair stands and advertising strategies. He always strove for a good form, the simple yet essential. "Good design does not reveal the effort that went into every single product," the universal designer once said. His design for the stackable bed from the year 1967 earned legendary status and received the "Federal Prize for Good Form" in 1972. Besides his industrial activities he devoted himself to journalistic work, e.g. for "Schöner Wohnen" from 1970-1989 and "Architektur & Wohnen" from 1975-99. The public zones of the Hamburg Stilwerk were planned by him, as were the special "Atmosphere" exhibitions of international textile suppliers for Messe Frankfurt (1992, 1994, 1996). He is a member of the Raimund Loewy Foundation, has curated several exhibitions and shown his own works at the IDZ Berlin and the "Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe" in Hamburg. Rolf Heide received the State Award of the City of Hamburg for Design and Applied Art. The Hanseatic city is known as the "gateway to the world". Heide's life work can certainly be seen in the same light.
